Car Key Replacement in Maryland & Washington, DC

Expert residential, commercial and automotive locksmith service across Maryland & Washington, DC — day or night.

A replacement car key is not one product. What you need, what it costs and how long it takes all depend on which of four generations your vehicle belongs to — and most people do not know which one they have until someone tells them.

The four kinds of car key

  • Mechanical key — a plain cut blade, no electronics. Mostly pre-1995 vehicles and some spare valet keys
  • Transponder key — a cut blade with a chip in the head that the immobiliser has to recognise. A copy without the chip will turn but will not start the engine
  • Remote head key — a transponder key with the lock and unlock buttons built into the same body
  • Proximity fob — push-button start, no blade in the ignition, usually with a hidden mechanical key inside the fob body for the door

If a hardware-store copy opens your door but will not start the car, you have a transponder key and the copy has no chip. That is the single most common misunderstanding in this trade.

What actually drives the price

Three things: the type of key above, whether you still have a working key, and whether the vehicle needs security data pulled before a key can be made. Adding a spare when you have one working key is at the cheap end. All keys lost on a vehicle with a protected immobiliser is at the other.

We quote before dispatch, not after arrival. If you have the year, make and model to hand when you call, the number we give you is the number you pay.

Dealer or locksmith

The dealership can key your car, but the vehicle has to get there — and if it has no working key that means a tow, which is frequently the largest single line on the bill. We work at the vehicle wherever it sits. That is the real difference, more than the price of the key itself.

The spare key argument

Cutting a spare while you still have one working key costs a fraction of an all-keys-lost job and takes a fraction of the time. Almost every expensive automotive call we attend would have been a cheap one if the owner had made a spare while they still could. Nobody ever regrets the spare.

Can you make a car key with no key at all?

Yes. All keys lost is standard work for us, done at the vehicle, with no towing required.

Do I need proof that the car is mine?

Always. Registration or title plus photo identification. We verify before cutting or programming anything.

Will a key from a scrapyard or eBay work?

The blade can usually be cut to match, but the electronics still have to be programmed to your specific vehicle. A used fob may also be locked to its previous car and unusable. Ask before buying one.
