A locksmith who tells you what is actually wrong

Makey Locksmith LLC is a mobile locksmith business covering Maryland and Washington, DC. No shop, no counter, no waiting room — the van comes to your door, your office, or wherever the car is parked, and the work happens there.

We are licensed by the State of Maryland under license number 538, insured, and BBB accredited with an A+ rating. Those are checkable facts rather than adjectives, which matters in a trade where anyone can print business cards. Our technicians are background-checked, and the phone is answered around the clock, every day of the year.

Residential locksmith services

Your home is the one building where a lock failure is not an inconvenience but a genuine problem. We handle the full range for houses, townhomes, condos and apartments across both counties — and where a lock can be repaired or rekeyed rather than replaced, we will tell you that instead of selling you hardware.

  • House and apartment lockouts, opened without damage wherever the lock allows
  • Lock rekeying after a move, a break-in, a breakup or a lost set of keys
  • Lock replacement, repair and realignment when a door stops latching properly
  • Deadbolt installation and high-security residential lock upgrades
  • Smart lock and keyless entry installation, set up and explained
  • Sliding door, patio door and window lock repair
  • Mailbox, cabinet, shed and garage side-door locks
  • Key duplication and spare keys cut before you need them

If your key has started needing a particular angle or a lift of the handle, the lock is telling you something. Dealing with it now is considerably less disruptive than dealing with it after it strands you.

Commercial locksmith services

A locked business is a closed business. We work with offices, retail, restaurants, warehouses, apartment complexes, medical facilities, property managers, landlords and HOAs throughout Maryland and DC, and we schedule around trading hours rather than through them.

  • Office, storefront and rear service door lockouts
  • Master key systems designed around your building and staff structure
  • Access control and keypad entry installation
  • Panic bars and exit devices, fitted and repaired
  • Commercial door closers
  • High-security commercial locks and restricted keyways
  • Rekeying for tenant turnover and staff changes
  • Safe installation and opening

Long-term security, not one-off callouts

Security is an ongoing arrangement rather than a single job. For businesses and property managers we plan the boring parts properly: periodic rekeying schedules, access-level restructuring as roles change, a process for employee turnover, security reviews, and hardware upgrades staged over time rather than all at once. It prevents the unauthorised access and operational disruption that unplanned security tends to produce.

Automotive locksmith services

Car key and lock problems happen in parking lots, driveways, roadsides and workplaces — not conveniently near a dealership. We work at the vehicle, which removes towing from the equation entirely.

  • Car lockouts, opened around the airbags and door wiring rather than through them
  • Lost car key replacement, cut and programmed on site
  • Transponder and chip key programming
  • Key fob and remote replacement, and resyncing fobs the car has stopped recognising
  • Ignition repair, rebuilding and replacement
  • Broken key extraction from doors and ignitions
  • All keys lost, including immobiliser module programming

We work with domestic, imported, luxury and fleet vehicles. For cars where the immobiliser data cannot be reached through the diagnostic port, we do module-level work on the bench — the FEM and BDC units on BMW and the earlier CAS modules among them. Most mobile locksmiths do not carry that equipment, which is why dealers, used-car lots and body shops call us rather than the other way round.

Emergency locksmith services

Lock problems do not keep business hours. Whether it is the middle of the afternoon or the middle of the night, someone answers, including weekends and public holidays.

  • Home, business and vehicle lockouts at any hour
  • Rekeying after a break-in, so the keys that were taken no longer work
  • Broken or jammed locks that will not release
  • Lost or stolen keys, including erasing stolen car keys from the vehicle
  • Emergency lock repair when a door will not secure

Smart locks and high-security hardware

Traditional keys are no longer the only option, and the choice has become genuinely confusing. We install and maintain smart locks, keypad and keyless entry systems, and high-security cylinders — and we will talk you through the trade-offs honestly rather than fitting whatever we happen to stock.

  • Choosing a digital lock that suits the door and the household
  • Setting up remote access and pairing locks with apps
  • Battery life, and what happens when the batteries die
  • Keeping a mechanical backup that actually works
  • High-security cylinders and restricted keys that cannot be copied at a kiosk

Why people call us back

We open locks without destroying them

Picking, decoding and bypassing leave your hardware intact and reusable. Drilling is a last resort, we tell you before we do it, and we explain why the lock left no alternative. A locksmith who drills first is choosing their own convenience over your property.

Upfront, transparent pricing

You get the price before we are dispatched, not after we arrive. No discovering on the doorstep that the figure quoted on the phone was a call-out fee and the real number is several times higher. This industry has a reputation for that particular trick, and we would rather be the opposite of it.

You speak to people who do the work

We are a local business, not a call centre routing your job to whoever is cheapest that day. Tell us what happened and we will tell you honestly whether you need us — sometimes the answer is a dead fob battery or a steering lock under tension, and we will say so rather than book a callout.

Equipment most mobile locksmiths do not carry

Key origination from vehicle codes, immobiliser programming, and module-level work on the bench. Combined with commercial access control and smart lock experience, it means one number covers jobs that would otherwise take three different companies.

What happens when you call

Nobody enjoys calling a locksmith, usually because they do not know what they are agreeing to. So, plainly:

  • You tell us what happened, where you are, and for a vehicle the year, make and model
  • We tell you what the job involves and what it costs, before anyone is dispatched
  • A technician comes to you — there is nothing to bring anywhere
  • We verify the property or vehicle is yours before opening anything
  • The work is done on site, and you see what was done and why

Bring identification and proof of ownership: a licence showing the address, a lease, a deed, a utility bill, or for a vehicle the registration or title. We check every time, without exception. That check is the reason nobody else can call a locksmith and have your door opened.

Common questions

Will you damage my door or lock getting in?

In the large majority of lockouts the lock is opened without damage and keeps working normally afterwards. Where a lock genuinely cannot be opened non-destructively, we tell you before doing anything irreversible.

My key turns in the ignition but the car will not start. Why?

The mechanical key and the immobiliser are separate systems. A key cut without the correct chip will turn the ignition while the car refuses to recognise it. The key has to be programmed to the vehicle, which we do on site.

Do you need proof that the property or car is mine?

Always. A licence with the address, a lease, a deed or a utility bill for property; registration or title plus photo identification for a vehicle. There are no exceptions, and that is a feature rather than an inconvenience.

Can you replace a car key when every key is lost?

Yes. All-keys-lost work is routine for us, including vehicles that need the immobiliser module read on the bench. The car does not need to be towed to a dealer.

Should I rekey or replace my locks?

Rekeying changes the internal pins so old keys no longer work, keeping your existing hardware. It suits most moves and lost-key situations. Replacement makes sense when the hardware is worn, damaged or below the security level you want. We will tell you which applies rather than defaulting to the more expensive one.

Are you available at night and on holidays?

Yes, 24 hours a day, every day of the year including public holidays. Overnight and holiday work may carry a different rate, and you will be told the price before we are dispatched.

Do you work with businesses and property managers?

Regularly. Master key systems, access control, tenant turnover rekeying and ongoing security planning for offices, retail, warehouses, apartment complexes and management companies across Maryland and DC.
