BMW FEM & BDC Module Programming

From roughly 2013 BMW moved key security into the FEM and BDC modules, and in doing so put it beyond the reach of diagnostic-port programming on a great many cars. This is the point where most mobile locksmiths stop.

The work involves removing the module from the vehicle, opening it, connecting to it directly on the bench, reading the security data, writing the new key, and refitting. It is closer to electronics work than to lock work, and it requires equipment that is expensive enough that most locksmiths never buy it.

Why we do it at your location

The alternative is the car going to a dealer on a flatbed and sitting there until a slot opens. We bring the bench to the vehicle. The module never leaves the site, which also means it never leaves your sight.

We will tell you if it is not worth it

Module work is more involved than standard programming, and we quote it before dispatch rather than after arrival. If your car turns out to be one where the job can be done through the port instead, we will say so and charge accordingly. There is no reason to sell you the harder version of a job you do not need.

What is a FEM or BDC module?

They are body control modules that also hold BMW's key and immobiliser data on cars built from roughly 2013. Because the data sits inside them, key programming often means working on the module directly.

Does the module have to leave my car?

It comes out of the vehicle and goes onto the bench at your location, then straight back in. It does not leave the site.

Why will other locksmiths not do this?

The equipment is costly and the work is closer to electronics than to traditional locksmithing. Most mobile locksmiths are not set up for it, which is why this is often quoted as dealer-only.
