No working key at all is the BMW scenario owners are most often told is dealer-only. It is not, and the dealer route almost always means a flatbed before anyone has even looked at the car.

With no key present nothing can be copied. The key has to be originated: the correct blade cut from the vehicle's own key data, and the immobiliser taught to accept a key it has never seen before. On many BMWs that data cannot be pulled through the diagnostic port, so the module is removed, read on the bench, and refitted.

What decides how involved your car is

• EWS cars — E36, E38, E39, E46, E53 — are the most straightforward of the BMW generations
• CAS1 through CAS3 — E60, E90, E70, E82 — vary by production date, and later CAS3+ builds are protected further
• FEM and BDC cars — F20, F30, F32, F15 and the G-series that follows — commonly require the module out and read on the bench
• MINI and Rolls-Royce under BMW ownership follow the same pattern

Cut a spare while the car is open to us

An all-keys-lost visit is the one occasion when a second key costs a fraction of what it otherwise would, because the difficult part is already done. Almost every expensive BMW call we attend would have been a cheap one if a spare had existed. It is worth doing while we are there.

Ownership is verified, without exception

Producing a working key for a car with no key present is precisely the capability a thief would want. Title or registration plus photo identification, every time. If that seems inconvenient, it is the same rule protecting your car from someone else.

Does my BMW need to be towed to a dealer?

In most cases no. We originate keys and program the immobiliser at the vehicle, including cars that need the module removed and read.

How do I know which immobiliser my BMW uses?

Model and year usually settle it. Tell us both when you call, plus the last seven of the VIN if you have it, and we will confirm before dispatch.

Will the lost keys still start my car afterwards?

Not once we have erased them. Removing old keys from the vehicle's memory is part of the job when keys are lost or stolen.
